If you are part of a social group or corporate department looking for an alternative to the same old entertainment and team-building events, a DSO Trivia Event will provide two or so hours of giddy fun, challenging teamwork, and/or constructive interaction, at a fraction of the cost of almost any similar group outing.

Previous DSO clients include Martha Stewart Living, the New York Yankees, Human Rights Watch, the Duke University Alumni Association, Kaplan, Inc., and many others. DSO has also led private parties, knitting groups, class reunions, birthdays, anniversaries, and wedding receptions.

A DSO Trivia Event can be held in any venue, from your boardroom to a banquet hall, from a high school gymnasium to the bar on the corner, from a large living room to an open outdoor field.

The DSO experience can include any or all of the following:

  • Custom-written questions that take into account your group’s areas of expertise and knowledge level. (Great for getting to know your co-workers in a comfortable environment of exchange.)
  • Special exercises created specifically to foster interplay and cooperation between team members
  • A scoring system that encourages the spirit of healthy competition
  • We can set up prizes and rewards for scoring as well as other fun and adaptable miscellaneous categories (handwriting, team names, wardrobe, team spirit, and so much more).
  • A seamless, start-to-finish, worry-free event for groups of anywhere from 10 to 200 people.

Nothing is more satisfying than being able to recognize, say, a Temptations song from the first three bars in an audio round.  Nothing is more frustrating than having the capital of Bulgaria on the tip of your tongue but just-not-quite getting there in time, or more vindicating than remembering Timothy Leary’s famous six-word philosophy, seconds before you have to turn in your final responses. Whether for fun competition, or constructive relationship building, trivia is always a thrill.  It’s a way for you to find out what your friends and your coworkers know, and for them to get to know you.  It’s also a way to tap into huge store of information inside your head. Because, and this is our basic premise, you know more than you know.

So, what’s your answer?  Make this your year! Try trivia!

Every Wednesday since February 2006, Tony Hightower has hosted the weekly DSO Trivia at Dempsey’s bar in the East Village, building it into the most popular trivia night in New York City with his unassuming charm, his unmatched depth of obscure music knowledge, and the unparalleled shininess of his very bald head. He’s recently branched out to a second night, on Mondays at Shades of Green. Bring his unique expertise to your group function!

Janet Rosen began her trivia night hosting career with “Drinking & Thinking” at an earlier version of Dempsey’s Pub. She has also performed standup comedy widely at comedy festivals. When she isn’t writing or performing, she works as literary agent and has been President of the Women’s National Book Association, New York City Chapter.

By the way, the answers: [1] Conan’s old friend Andy Richter; [2] They all have played Batman’s nemesis, the Joker; and [3] Cock-a-leekie soup is one of the national dishes of Scotland. Also, the capital of Bulgaria is Sofia, and Timothy Leary said “Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out.”
